IFTS, Tomorrow’s pilots

20 November 2024

An integrated training model with interconnected systems on the ground and in the air. This is the innovation enabled by Leonardo's technologies in the International Flight Training School (IFTS), an advanced flight training centre dedicated to military pilots from Air Forces around the world. The activity of the Decimomannu (Cagliari, Italy) base is illustrated in Caterina Ruggeri's report for Studio Aperto Mag.

The IFTS was born from the collaboration between Leonardo and the Italian Air Force. Its campus covers over 130,000 square metres and was designed around the students' needs. Today, the academy has 45 instructors, both military and civilian, and 80 trainees from 13 partner nations. The aim is to make tomorrow's military pilots ready to fly next generation fighter aircraft.

The training period lasts ca. nine months and the course involves the use of the most advanced simulation tools. These include a Live, Virtual and Constructive approach, which allows trainees to interact, through the simulator, with pilots in the air during the same training mission.
