Francesco Calabrò, a graduate in Electronic Engineering, has worked within the Group for 15 years. Since 2015 he has been Head of the Artificial Intelligent Research Centre at Leonardo’s Cyber & Security Solutions base in Rome.
Together with his team he works on developing products and technologies with the aim of analysing and identifying advanced technological solutions based on artificial intelligence, validating their technological maturity in terms of the hardware, software and IT aspects, and verifying the potential for industrial applications in markets of interest. Video analysis, image processing, audio analysis and cyber are some of the many research areas studied within the Laboratory. For example, as he himself tells us, algorithms have been developed within the context of video security that can be used to protect cities assisting operators in their activities.
One of the projects that Francesco Calabrò is particularly committed to regards new solutions to support Search & Rescue activities, although he says that the greatest challenge in his career has been:
“building solutions based on highly innovative technologies and bringing them to a level of robustness and maturity that is recognised by customers...”.
Together with his team he is currently working to obtain two patents in the context of the AWARE project for the Digital Transformation of Helicopters. The patents will cover the development of artificial intelligence models to monitor the efficiency of aircraft.
His career path has been one of constant professional growth over time, that - assisted by the international and multicultural environment he lives in every day within Company - has enabled him to develop the skills he needs and to achieve major objectives through the benefit of teamwork. This has been the key to his success in reconciling his work with his own interests: technology and innovation.
He advises young recent graduates to explore the professional opportunities that the Company offers, because here too it is possible to drive innovation, to tackle and solve challenging technological problems, and to win the challenge against those who (like start-ups) should be faster and more flexible, “...thanks also to the opportunities that a brand like Leonardo - and only Leonardo - can ensure”.
