Reliable and effective communications will ensure the exchange of information, which is needed to coordinate operations and promptly manage the security of the G20 in Venice. Leonardo has deployed an advanced radio network to support the G20 summit – the event comprises the Finance Ministers and the Central Banks’ Governors of the world’s largest economies - which is taking place in the Italian city on 9 and 10 July.
Delivered within an extremely tight timescale, Leonardo has implemented a TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio, the international standard for mission critical communications) communication infrastructure for the security forces that will protect the event, which, in case of emergency, will be able to carry out rapid interventions and ensure the highest standards of security to the summit area, to the population and to the territory.
The network developed by the company consists of base transceiver stations and radio links located in strategic places of the city. The technology will guarantee secure digital communications and widespread radio coverage in the Venice City and Mestre area, in addition to the lagoon and in the shores, and up to the gates of Padua and Treviso, for a total area of about 1,000 square kilometres. Some workstations have been set up in the operations room – where the security of the G20 will be managed – to coordinate information and locate resources within the territory from around 600 communication terminals that will be used by the Forces in the field. The network is also designed for interoperability with broadband devices.
